Vicky Lee is an attractive 35 year-old. With long chestnut hair and a slim but muscular body, wrapped in a long black dress, she greets us as we make our way down the stairs of a select Knightsbridge bar. The people are glamourous, and the atmosphere warm and welcoming, and Vicky Lee, like many of the guests, is a man.

The Way Out is one of London's premiere transvestite night spots. People of all ages mingle; some old and dressed subtly, like your mother, others creating looks straight out of Dangerous Liaisons, with huge wigs and startling white faces. The sexuality of those present cannot be taken for granted. "I would describe myself as a transvestite, but others would themselves as gay drag queens," explains Vicky Lee.

The atmosphere inside the club is sexually-charged, but not threatening. The eclectic mix of different ages and styles makes this scene what it is; no one looks out of place. The feeling is one of celebrating differences, both within the scene, and between themselves and those outside the scene. Our host sums up: "Dressing to fit with the feelings in your head."
