Jeremy Sandford, the author of ‘Cathy Come Home’, tells of his idyllic upbringing at Eye Manor, an Arts and Crafts mansion in rural Herefordshire; through the war years when his father was an officer in the local resistance movement, and on into peacetime when, with his family desperately short of petrol, he spent much time wandering, on horseback or bicycle, through the neighbouring estates of Croft Castle and Berrington Hall.

Later memories, in this or other volumes, will tell romantically of postwar Oxford and London, and his betrothal to the beautiful Nell Dunn.

Later again come ‘Cathy’ and his other well-known work, ‘Edna, the Inebriate Woman’, his involvement with the Hippy world, New Travellers, Romany Gypsies, and the New Age and Circle Dancing, and his present home, Hatfield Court in Herefordshire.

At intervals through his vivid life narrative, Jeremy finds time for more leisurely and poetic evocations of places and people who have been especially important to him, often drawing on his journals and other writings of those times. The Savoy Hotel, Eel Pie Island, Newington Lodge Hostel for the Homeless, the River Wye, Gospel Pass in the Black Mountains; ‘Dandy Kim’ Caborn Waterfield, the poets Laurie Lee and R S Thomas, and the artist John Bratby.

Note:

These memoirs currently exist as far as the end of ‘Cathy Come Home’ and a bit further. The rest of the story has not yet been written coherently.
