The Warp

Nell Second Meeting

I was Rachel’s partner. Hutch sang, and one of the hostesses in introducing him made a speech. She undulated away before him, dot-dot-dot dashing at him with her eyes. She was hissed.

Thomas and some girl, Mark and Nell, I and Rachel, drove through the evening up to Highgate Cemetery and wandered among the graves in our frilly dresses. Nell’s feet tap-tapping among the graves. She wanted to find Karl Marx’s. The Gothic church like a painted church stood over us.

Afterwards Rachel and I drove down a street which I shall never forget for the sudden and barracklike road that appeared on our left, and from it a chill wind wafting.

Then I drove back to Oxford, stopping when I was too sleepy to drive any further.
